ABOUT BROOKS CO-OP
We are a 14 people (grad students, undergrads, and working residents) house with 5 bathrooms and an in-house laundry facility. We are located about 3 blocks from the northeast corner of UIUC campus. We welcome people of all backgrounds, and encourage diversity! The only requirement is being interested in becoming part of our community. We currently have 2 cats living in the house, but have designated communal areas that are cat free.
WHY CHOOSE TO LIVE IN A CO-OP?
Co-op housing provides benefits that are hard to come by in other housing situations.
•House meals 6 days a week: Sunday-Thursday dinners and Saturday brunch
•Two communal fridges full of produce, staples and prepared dishes
•Sharing work cooking and shopping so you have less to worry about!
•Vegetarian and vegan friendly
Our house is kept neat and clean by splitting up chores among all members. It's an old house, so it also needs regular upkeep: members get together for "work days" twice a year to work on projects for maintenance and house improvement.
We have a workshop in the basement with a wide assortment of tools available for personal or house projects. You might even get help from other house members!
As a co-op, we try to minimize our negative environmental and social impact by
•composting and recycling whenever possible
•supporting local farms
•buying fair-trade (when we can afford it)
•house bikes are available for members to curb CO2 emissions :)
Living in a co-op fosters a strong sense of community. Through house meals and events (like Sunday movie night!), members get the chance to form close bonds and lasting friendships. As in the opening song of Arthur, we "get together and make things better by working together." That simple message is at the heart of Brooks Co-op.
HOUSE MEMBER RESPONSIBILITIES
All house members are expected to contribute 5 hours per week to the house.
All members do a 1-hour chore once per week. Most chores can be done any day of the week as long as they are done, or the labor coordinator makes special arrangements. Everyone has to do their part in order for the house to run smoothly.
All members take turns cooking in pairs once per week. Cooks spend 2 hours preparing 2 dishes each and up to 1 hour on after-dinner clean-up.
Once in fall and once in spring, all members devote an entire day to projects that are necessary for the upkeep or improvement of the house.
